Earth Friendly Luxury
When I started Havana Home I wanted to create a Luxury Product that was as beautiful as it’s European counterparts but made in Australia. Once I had decided on what I wanted to create it was important to me that it was also environmental friendly and non toxic. As I mentioned in a previous post on the benefits of Soy Vs Paraffin there are many candles on the market made from toxic ingredients. If you haven’t read that post, I really suggest that you do Soy Vs Paraffin in Your Home.
There is a sense that luxury and environmental friendliness are incompatible and perhaps at one point this was true. Earth friendly products tended to be drab, coarse and less effective.
But in recent years, research into sustainable practice and ingredients has allowed manufacturers to access extremely high quality, potent ingredients from natural sources. This means it is now possible to have the best products also achieving extremely high environmental standards.
The Need for Change
When it comes to candles the shift has been marked. Where once the majority of candles were made of petroleum wax and lead wicks and most fragrances were synthetic, there has been a shift to cleaner, greener waxes such as soy, beeswax and sustainable palm wax. These waxes are not only better for the environment, but are far more luxurious in the home. Soy wax for example has a brighter glow than petroleum based wax and burns cleanly without any harmful fumes. Cotton wicks have replaced the old wicks, most of which had a metal thread running through the centre that often contained lead (these are now illegal in Australia) and not only does it mean the air is far less toxic, but the wicks smoke less.
Scent is another important part of the candle industries sustainability journey. Scents created from natural essential oils provide a completely different experience to synthetic alcohol based fragrances. Synthetic scents smell similar to natural ones at first, but they offer no real physical benefits. Natural oils, extracted from plants and flowers are not only a better environmental alternative, but come with a range of benefits that make the experience of smelling them entirely luxurious and uplifting. The more natural the oils used in a candle or body product scent, the more effective they are in positively affected physical, emotional and mental health. These natural oils and scents enter the body via the skin or the olfactory system and can relieve mild physical ailments such as headaches and fatigue and generally lift your mood.
Often the simplest products are the most effective. They just might not be the cheapest and that is why there is a plethora of synthetic products on the market. If you are committed to being earth-friendly, it will take some education to be sure of what is natural and also effective. Sometimes there are products – like palm oil or palm wax based home products that seem natural and vegan, but are actually causing deforestation and hard to animal populations. If you are strictly vegan you may also want to avoid beeswax products or check that they are careful and sustainably harvested. Many scents and fragrances are still tested on animals for safety, despite the differences in animal and human physiology and it is simply unnecessary to do this if you use high quality, naturally sources products.
It is extremely important to me at Havana Home, as an animal lover and passionate advocate for the earth that, whilst we maintain our Luxury Brand mentality – we want your home to feel like a haven of beauty and relaxation – that we do this in a way that honours our larger home, the earth. To this end we use the highest quality natural oils and scents, the most natural waxes available and all of our packaging is 100% recyclable, from our boxes to our candle glass.
True luxury and enjoyment comes not only from a beautiful experience, but from the knowledge that you have made an ethical and sustainable choice for your home.
